The Art Institute of Pittsburgh 라는 곳에서, Bacn 이라는 신조어를 발표하였다.

Bacn은 우리가 잘 아는 베이컨(Bacon)에서 o를 뺀 것인데..

스팸메일의 Spam 이라는 용어가 햄제품 스팸에서 온 것을 기억하면.. 이해가 좀 쉬울 듯 하다.

Spam보다는 그래도 낫다는 의미라고 하는데...

좀 이름이 괴상하기도 하고, 이게 뭐야! 라는 생각도 들지만, 최근 해외 블로그를 통해 꽤 알려지고 있는 명칭이다.

Spam은 발신자가 수신자의 동의 여부와는 관계없이 일방적으로 쏘아대는 이메일인 반면,

Bacn은 수신자가 이메일 수신에 대하여는 동의를 하였으나, 거의 읽어보지 않는 이메일이다.


예를 들면, 읽지도 않고 지우는 OOO 쇼핑몰들의 광고메일이 대충 비슷할 것 같다.

가끔 있는 이벤트에 참가하거나 쿠폰을 받기 위해 이메일 수신동의는 했는데,

이메일을 거의 읽어보지는 않고,

그렇다고 수신거부를 하지도 않는다.



사실, Bacn이라는 용어는 사람들 사이에서 자연적으로 발생한 것이 아니라,

특정 단체에 의해서 만들어진 조어 라는 점에서..

이 용어가 계속 사용될지, 폐기될지는 불확실하다.



그러나 Bacn이라는 용어는 이메일마케팅에 있어서 굉장히 중요한 점을 시사해주고 있다.

고객의 수신동의를 받는 것만으로는 불충분하다는 것.



고객과 관련성(relevance)있는 메시지를 계속 발송하여,

그 고객으로부터 좋은 평판(reputation)을 유지하는 것이 중요하다고 할 수 있겠다.

Bacn (pronounced bacon) is the term given to electronic messages which have been subscribed to and are therefore not unsolicited but are often unread by the recipient for a long period of time. Bacn is email you want but not right now[1].


They differ from spam messages, in that they are not unsolicited and are not necessarily sent in bulk. Bacn derives its name from the idea that it is "better than spam, but not as good as a personal e-mail".[2]


The term Bacn was originally coined at PodCamp Pittsburgh 2 and since then has become popular amongst the blogging community. However, some find the term to be little more than manufactured marketing material to sell merchandise.[3]


Common examples of Bacn messages include news alerts, messages from social networking sites and wiki watch lists.

The word has also attracted attention in the professional email marketing community. Commentators have welcomed the distinction from spam and used the term to focus businesses on the need to improve the quality and value (to the recipient) of these kinds of transactional messages.[4]
